VERA FILES FACT CHECK: MISLEADING post claims Poe called Duterte admin ‘palpak’

An online post making the rounds on social media this week misleads in claiming Sen. Grace Poe called the Rodrigo Duterte administration “palpak (a failure).”

The Aug. 31 post by website pinoyhubarticle.info bore the headline:

Shocking! Grace Poe galit na pinagsabihan ang Duterte Admin na maraming ginawang Palpak sa bansa (Shocking! Grace Poe calls out the Duterte administration for its many failures).”

It carried a 10-minute video that pieced together clips from an Aug. 29 CNN Philippines broadcast, which includes an interview with Poe.

Nowhere in the video, uploaded the same day by Youtube channel TOKHANG TV, which has a history of posting false and misleading reports, did Poe criticize the entire Duterte administration.

The senator was referring to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) officials and the chaos that ensued following a Xiamen Airlines mishap when she said:

…talagang mayroon silang malaking kakulangan. While they can learn from this incident, it is clear they were too focused on getting the plane off the runway that they failed to attend to the needs of the passengers, or offer assistance while they were waiting).”

Thousands were stranded when a Xiamen Airlines plane skidded off the runway Aug. 16, causing flight cancellations, based on reports by CNN Philippines, Rappler.com, and Inquirer.net.

Pinoyhubarticle.info’s misleading report, which could have reached some 372,000 people, was posted two days after the Senate began its inquiry on the NAIA incident.

Social media traffic to the story largely came from the pages Dugong Maharlika, Duterte News Media, and Elite-Readers.
